The Museum

citazione

“…the objects I am going to show you came to light not long ago.
The main ones I was able to collect from the excavations of foundations for the new houses, which were built after 1857 in the lower part of the village, called Borgo…”

Carlo Giulietti

Carlo Giulietti, a lawyer, local administrator and philanthropist, was ‘one of the most passionate devotees of national history.

Born into an important Casteggio family (his grandson was the explorer Giuseppe Maria Giulietti), he graduated in law in 1850, and for seventeen years was vice-prector of Casteggio. Between 1854 and 1855 he was a member of the health commission, when he had to deal with a serious cholera epidemic; he was then mayor of his town between 1856 and 1860, very troubled years (the Battle of Montebello was fought near Casteggio, preceded by the Austrian occupation).

However, his contribution to local history was no less than his administrative and philanthropic activities, especially from 1888 onwards. He helped save from probable dispersion the numerous archaeological finds from Clastidium (the Roman Casteggio) that were coming to light precisely at that time, as the village expanded over the area of theemporium and necropolis of the ancient city. He collected them in a private museum, which was visited by distinguished scholars, and then allocated them to the archaeological collections of the Pavia Civic Museums, of which they still form no small part (Casteggio Hall).

From his research on medieval and modern documents preserved in local, civil and ecclesiastical archives, he drew a huge amount of information that he illustrated in his historical works.

Palace

Certosa Cantù

Palazzo Certosa Cantù has an ancient history, beginning around the end of the 17th century, when the monks of the Certosa di Pavia started its construction.

The keystone above the main entrance is in fact engraved with the year 1705.
Originally, it was a farm hospice where a wine was produced that is said to have been among the best in the country.

Cantù is the surname of the last owner, Prof. Luigi Cantù.
Currently, it is home to the Civic Archaeological Museum of Casteggio and the Oltrepò Pavese and the Civic Library named after Ernestina Pelizza Marangoni, as well as a hub of the town’s cultural activities.

Giuseppe Maria Giulietti

The Giuseppe Maria Giulietti room, located on the ground floor of Palazzo Certosa Cantù, houses the memorabilia and works of art that belonged to the well-known explorer from Castelfranco, donated by his descendant Dr. Giuliano Giulietti in 2022.

Giuseppe Maria Giulietti was born in Casteggio in 1847 to Giulio, a leather merchant, and Teresa Venco. Even as a child he showed a lively and strong-willed character with a taste for adventure. His sister Elena traces an interesting psychological profile of him in a biography.

The Archaeological Museum of Casteggio and Oltrepò Pavese

The Civico Museo Archeologico di Casteggio e dell’Oltrepò Pavese (Archaeological Museum of Casteggio and the Oltrepò Pavese area) was founded in 1974 thanks to the will of the municipal administration and a group of local enthusiasts.

The Lombardy Archaeological Superintendence has deposited there the finds from excavations carried out in Casteggio and the Oltrepò Pavese area, thus making it possible to reconstruct the entire history of the territory from the Neolithic period (4th millennium B.C.) to the Renaissance period.
